A DOG?????

In Tuesday's edition of the Times News, there is an article on the recent school board meeting. During the meeting, a group of veterans asked that the school board rename the football stadium in Pound after two fallen soldiers of the Vietnam War. Well, needless to say, the school board would take no action on the proposal, except to invite the group back to their Oct.9, meeting. During some discussion about the topic and what to do, Barry Nelson, chairman of the board made a horrific statement about renaming the stadium. During discussion, he blurted out that he would like to rename his hometown stadium after his dog. (This is paraphrased). My point is, does Mr. Nelson think that veterans are at the same level as a dog? [img]/LDPforum/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif[/img] I know that a lot of veterans read and post on here, so, do we like being compared to a dog by one of our own locally elected officials??

Sounds like he didn't take their proposal seriously at all and in turn sounded more than a little disrespectful with his return comment.

I would hope that he would have a response for the article. I would also hope that the comments were taken out of context. Probably another example of an elected official inserting foot in mouth. It would be a nice gesture to honor those fallen soldiers, but school boards really seem to waffle at such suggestions. Don't know why, but they do. What do they call the stadium now?

The stadium is called Riggs and I hope the point Nelson was trying for, was "everybody wants to name them for something" . I've already seen this arguement at this level, perhaps, Veterans Stadium would work , as if you start to get into narrowing it down to a list of a few, it becomes a nightmare. JSD was probably gone longer than anyone , then you have Powers.

I meant Pound's stadium. I believe that stuff like this gets everybody's feathers ruffled, and an idea that was meant to be a good intention starts breaking a community apart. Even by honoring war dead, somebody, inevitably, will be offended. With that being said, he should have just kept his mouth shut at that particular moment.

If somebody is offended by honoring the war dead, then [censored] them and the horse they rode in on. The reason that we are able to enjoy fun Friday nights is because these heroes over time (dead and alive) gave their blood, sweat, tears, and lives to keep us free. If the vets are able to get this done, then it will be just a tiny bit of recognition- God knows they deserve much more.

Maybe somebody from Wise County needs to remind Barry Nelson of that. Very well said. I just read an article where a proposal to name a new school after SFC Randy Shughart (Medal of Honor receipiant from Somalia) was shunned. Talk about a hero, read Blackhawk Down. Soldiers have always been my heroes and that's why I wanted to become one. A memorial is a very small thank you for those veterans who are not here to enjoy the very things we take for granted.

I pretty much have the same opinion as Indian Dad on the honoring the war heros. But you are right it gets tangled up. Never know about Nelson?
